History of East Harlem

Harlem was settled by the dutch in 1658 which was consisted of farmland. As the community of New York grew the population of Harlem was inevitable. The people began to move north and as time went on the community of Harlem and specifically the community of East Harlem has gone through its fair share of migrations. With the first migration being with low-income Eastern Europeans then the migration shifted and became an Italian based community. However, the largest and most popular change is the Hispanic migration.

With the migration of Puerto Ricans in East Harlem the culture of Puerto Rico was brought over through the people of which moved in. With this change came the name of Spanish Harlem and later El Barrio which in Spanish means  “the Neighborhood”. As the culture shifted the neighborhood became more custom to the lifestyle of the residents. The neighborhood became custom to things like loud salsa music and street art.
