Interview Results

The results of the study done came from an interview with a young local artist. The interview was with a young man named Jose Aurelio Baez. According to Mr. Baez the street art of East Harlem isn’t at risk of losing its cultural identity because the local government and the community of East Harlem are connected to the arts. Mr. Baez stated the main concern of the arts is losing its affect to the community. When I asked how would this happened he stated if the community allows art to be “installed daily for corporate motivation.” Mr. Baez said that this would lead to the community connection becoming weakened because corporations will use artist who are the most popular and this could lead to the culture of the community not be represented.

Survey Results

Surveys were conducted on 105th street in front of the El Museo del Barrio. The survey was responded to by 30 participants which found that 67 % lived in East Harlem and 55% of the 20 participants who live in East Harlem have been residents for the past 4 years. According to the individuals who participated in the survey 80% feel that gentrification hasn’t impacted the street art in the community. the only concern arises from the survey results was that 60% of respondents has no interest in contributing to the arts in the community. This is a concern because if the community doesn’t contribute or find it not important it may end up being lost.
